Reasons why Senate rejected Onochie.

The Senate has rejected Lauretta Onochie following the report of the Committee on INEC, headed by Senator Kabiru Daya.

The committee disapproved Onochie’s nomination on the basis that it contradicts 14 (3) of the 1999 Constitution on the Principle of Federal Character.

According to the committee, Onochie was disqualified because she hails from Delta State which has already produced sitting national Commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu.

“Her nomination violated the federal character principle and national unity. Other sections of the country has also presented petitions against her nomination”, they said.

DeErudite media gathered that In 2016, the Senate approved the nomination of May Agbamuche-Mbu who also hails from Delta State as a National Commissioner.

Recall that Onochie’s nomination triggered criticisms from Civil society groups, Oppositions, as well as well-meaning Nigerians. She was accused of being a puppet to the ruling party.

However, when she appeared before the Senate last week, she denied being a member of any political Party, stating that she resigned from politics since 2019.
