War: Russian soldier bags life imprisonment for killing civilian in Ukraine

In Ukraine’s first war crimes trial, a 21-year-old Russian soldier was sentenced to life in prison for shooting a civilian to death.

On Monday, the soldier admitted to shooting a 62-year-old civilian during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in court in Kiev.

The case was the first to be heard in court following international outrage over Russian atrocities in Ukraine, which claimed the lives of several people.

According to reports, the shooting took place in the village of Chupakhivka in the north-eastern Sumy region.

The Siberian soldier testified in court that he followed orders from his superiors.

During the trial, he apologized, but the prosecution demanded life in prison.

The defence argued for acquittal, saying the soldier was carrying out an order.

The sentence will only become final after a possible appeal.

It is possible that the man will be exchanged for Ukrainian prisoners in Russia.
