Supreme Court: Ohanaeze Youth Council Sends Strong Message to Tinubu over Kanu’s Trial

The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), a leading Igbo youth socio-cultural organization, is advocating for President Bola Tinubu to halt the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in a bid to during ace and spur development in Nigeria’s South-East region.

The President General of OYC, Igboayaka Igboayaka, made the call during a press briefing in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

He highlighted the negative impact of the previous administration’s handling of self-determination movements in the Southeast while criticizing the approach, including military operations and the persistent detention of Kanu, for exacerbating tensions and failing to secure peace or encourage development in the area.

Igboayaka pointed out the futility of continuing Kanu’s trial, describing it as a continuation of ineffective strategies that have not achieved peace, unity, or development. He stressed the importance of this moment for President Tinubu to prioritize healing and progress in the South-East by dismissing all charges against Kanu, particularly as he is due in court soon for what has been described as a misguided trial initiated by the former president.

The OYC leader also praised President Tinubu’s recent decision to drop treason charges against activist Omoyele Sowore, viewing it as a positive step towards national peace.
With Kanu’s court appearance looming, Igboayaka and peace advocates across Nigeria are looking forward to President Tinubu similarly discontinuing the case against the IPOB leader, aligning with broader interests of peace in the country.

Furthermore, Igboayaka appealed to Justice Binta Nyako to overlook past executive pressures and apply the “Justice of Peace” principles in Kanu’s case, advocating for his bail and highlighting his release as pivotal to achieving lasting peace in the South-East.
