Soldiers protest poor equipment and unpaid allowances in Borno

Soldiers attached to Operation Lafiya Dole in the North-East on March 25, protested their posting to a location in the Theatre of Operation.

Sources told Channels TV that the aggrieved soldiers at the Maimalari barracks besieged the headquarters of the Theatre Command in Borno State, shooting sporadically into the air on Thursday night following their deployment. They cited non-payment of allowances and poor equipment as reasons for their rebellion.

Some of the soldiers who spoke under anonymity recalled how a whole unit that went for reinforcement when Marte was captured last month, were killed due to poor weaponry they took to confront the insurgents who came armed with sophisticated weapons.

This protest is coming barely two weeks after it was reported that the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, during an interview claimed that the monies allocated for the purchase of weapons during the tenure of the immediate past service chiefs cannot be accounted for. Monguno however released a statement later, denying he ever made such a claim.

The Nigerian Army is yet to react to the protest by the aggrieved soldiers.
