Social Media Influencer, Bobrisky Convicted For Money Laundering, Pleads Guilty in Court

Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, famously known as Bobrisky, found himself before Justice Abimbola Awogboro at the Federal High Court, Ikeja, facing charges of Naira abuse.

On April 5, 2024, the renowned cross-dresser and social media influencer admitted guilt to the accusations laid against him, marking a significant moment in the Nigerian legal system’s handling of currency misuse cases.

Bobrisky, who arrived at court early in the morning escorted by officials from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), was initially up against six counts, including allegations of money laundering. However, before the hearing progressed, the prosecution led by Suleiman Suleiman requested the dismissal of counts five and six, narrowing the charges strictly to the abuse of the Nigerian naira.

The court session revealed Bobrisky’s admission of unawareness regarding the specific laws against the mishandling of the national currency. Justice Awogboro promptly dismissed ignorance as a defense, to which Bobrisky responded with an acknowledgment and a plea for a chance to amend his ways. He proposed using his considerable influence on social media, where he boasts over five million followers, as a platform to educate and inform the public about the legalities surrounding currency handling.

“I regret my actions, my lord,” Bobrisky stated, expressing a willingness to not only correct his mistake but to also contribute positively by raising awareness among his large audience.
