Anambra State Government Kicks Off State-Wide Drainage Desilting, Set to Punish Defaulters

The Anambra State Government, led by Governor Soludo, has initiated a comprehensive drainage desilting campaign, as Anambra is recognized by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) as a flood-prone area.

The campaign, known as “Operation Keep Your Gutters Clean,” is split into two annual phases. It began this year in major zones in Awka on April 24, 2024, and will extend to other regions. This initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to a clean, green, and sustainable environment.

During a press interaction, Anambra’s Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Felix Odimegwu, highlighted that on February 20, 2024, the ministry mandated community leaders, various associations, markets, motor parks, schools, churches, and other public entities to start clearing all drainage systems from February 23 to March 15. This directive aims to mitigate the upcoming rainy season’s challenges promptly.

Dr. Odimegwu noted the decrease in flooding and absence of fatalities in 2023, attributing these outcomes to proactive state measures, including extensive desilting of major drainage channels. He emphasized the current focus on enforcement, with strict penalties for non-compliance under the public health law of 2006. Several establishments have already been sealed and face prosecution for failing to clear their drainages.
