Police storm Ede Poly over planned fee hike protest

On Wednesday, operatives of the Nigeria Police Force stormed the gate of the Federal Polytechnic in Ede, Osun State, in response to a planned demonstration by the institution’s students against a recent fee hike.

According to The Punch, on May 6 the institution’s Rector, Dr. John Adekolawole, acknowledged an increase in fees to newsmen over the phone. Former student Adejayan Gbenga said that the school’s administration threatened him with arrest for criticizing the tuition increase.

The security personnel attacked the college with their vans as a group of students under the auspices of ‘FPE Students Defender’ in collaboration with ‘Concerned Nigerian Students’ planned a demonstration at the institution’s entrance on Wednesday.

Sources also said that some of the students had allegedly been arrested. Efforts to reach the Osun State Public Relations Officer, SP Opalola Olawoyin, for comments, proved abortive as she had not responded to calls.
