How Igbo People Go Back to Their Routes: See What Happens in Anambra as Agulu Popular Masquerades Festival Returns

There was a rhapsody of joy that enveloped the atmosphere with celebration which beclouded the entire Agulu Community in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, following the lift on the ban of one of their most revered traditional festivals, popularly known as the Akpala Mmanwu Agulu.

The reversal of the ban was made public after several meetings, deliberation, and review of the modus operandi guiding the activities of the traditionalists in charge of the festivals.

Gathered like a congregation on a Sunday service, several masquerades seated leisurely to relish themselves upon the historic announcement that heralded the Agulu Unity Hall in Agulu Community, Anambra state.

Agulu Community is one of the biggest communities in Anaocha Local Government Area, under Anambra Central Senatorial District, in Anambra State.

It would be recalled that what most of the community people described as the draconic order against the activities of the masquerades came in the nick of time when suspicion allegedly shrouded the operations of the custodians of the Akpala Mmawu Agulu, an epic event in the history of the community.

Meanwhile, the heritage and values of the Agulu community were said to have drawn credence to Akpala Mmanwu Agulu, which to many, formed the basis of the rich cultural genealogy of the people.

It is an epochal event, characterized by its vibrant masquerades and traditional dances, displayed to the relish of the community people, and the general spectators who converge from within and outside the community to witness the celebration.

Consequently, the earlier suspension of their activities was felt deeply by the community, triggering its official reinstatement as a cause for celebration.

Significantly enough, the lifting of the suspension brought about the renewal of traditions and a rekindling of the communal spirit that had a sequel to the halt dwindled.
It is also a reflection of the community’s doggedness and commitment to preserving its cultural identity while moving forward in unity and strength.

The ceremony at the Agulu Unity Hall was not just a formal announcement but a vibrant celebration of culture, history, and communal achievement. It was a reminder of the power of unity and the importance of maintaining a connection to one’s roots.

Thus, as the community looks forward to witnessing the return of the Akpala Mmanwu Agulu, this event would stand as a beacon of hope and progress.

The lift of the ban emphasizes the significance of confabulation, love, and collective action in overcoming challenges and fostering a sense of belonging and pride among community members. Agulu Community has upon this risen again to embrace the fullness of their cultural heritage.
