Facebook User Issues Apology to Nathaniel Bassey, Mercy Chinwo Over Defamation Claims

Kingsley Ibe, a Facebook user involved in a defamation case, has issued an apology to gospel artists Nathaniel Bassey and Mercy Chinwo.

This development follows a legal action taken by Bassey against Ibe and three other Facebook users for spreading unfounded claims that Bassey was the father of a child belonging to another renowned gospel singer.

Ibe voluntarily surrendered to police custody, acknowledging his part in the spread of these allegations on the social media platform X. The other individuals cited in Bassey’s legal petition include Okoronkwo Ejike, Terrence Ekot, and Dj Spoiltkid, all of whom have been implicated in the defamation and cyberstalking case.

Bassey’s legal team released a statement on Monday, indicating that Ibe had cooperated with the police by providing a statement and evidence for the impending prosecution on charges of criminal defamation and cyber-related offenses. The statement also highlighted Ibe’s expression of remorse and his commitment to improving his conduct as a member of the community.

Expressing regret over his actions in a video apology, Ibe specifically addressed Nathaniel Bassey and his family, apologizing for his “reckless” comments and acknowledging the harm caused. He extended his apologies to Bassey’s fans, followers, and participants of the Hallelujah Challenge, as well as to the RCCG Oasis community.

Ibe also sought forgiveness from Mercy Chinwo and her family, acknowledging the potential negative impact of his words, which he insisted were not intended to cause harm
