A veteran Nigerian actress, Ethel Aderemi, popularly known as Ekpe, is dead.

The talented actress succumbed to cancer on Wednesday in Lagos, leaving behind a legacy that touches many lives both on and off the screen.

Ethel Ekpe, a name synonymous with talent and versatility, made her mark with memorable performances in several iconic Nigerian television shows. She captured the hearts of audiences with her unique portrayal of Segi in the classic sitcom “Basi and Company,” penned by the renowned Ken Saro Wiwa on the Nigerian Television Authority.

Her career spanned several decades, during which she evolved from a screen beauty to a pastor, showcasing her depth and versatility as an artist. Ethel’s remarkable contributions to the Nigerian film industry included roles in Amaka Igwe’s “Forever” and, more recently, “Sons of the Caliphate.”

The news of her passing was shared by Dr. Shaibu Husseini, the Director General of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), in a heartfelt Facebook post. He reminisced about Ethel’s unparalleled talent and the joy she brought to viewers, noting that her absence would be deeply felt. Dr. Husseini also shared a personal note, revealing that his family had named their second daughter Ethel in honor of the actress, highlighting the profound impact she had on their lives.
