BREAKING: Nationwide Strike Looms as Nigerian Workers, NLC, TUC Issue Fresh Ultimatum to Tinubu

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) Thursday, issued a 14-day notice for a nationwide strike to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The announcement comes as a reaction to the government’s inaction on fulfilling the terms of a 16-point agreement from October 2023, aimed at mitigating the severe distress brought about by the surge in petrol costs and the devaluation of the naira, both of which have significantly contributed to the country’s economic hardship.

Expressing profound dissatisfaction, the NLC and TUC have given the Federal Government a firm deadline to meet their obligations under the agreement by the 9th of February 2024, emphasizing their frustration with the government’s lack of concern over the widespread suffering and adversity faced by the masses.

In their statements, the leadership of both unions voiced their sorrow over the government’s disregard for the labor sector’s attempts at maintaining peace and lamented the severe socio-economic impacts resulting from the poorly implemented recommendations by the IMF and World Bank to raise PMS prices and devalue the currency.

These measures have, as anticipated, led to dire financial implications for both the general populace and the workforce in Nigeria.

The unions regretfully noted that the necessity to take such drastic action stems from the ongoing disregard for the well-being of Nigerian citizens and workers, alongside the escalating economic challenges.

Given these circumstances and the need to urgently safeguard the rights and dignity of Nigerian workers and citizens, the NLC and TUC are compelled to issue this urgent ultimatum to the Federal Government, urging them to adhere to the previously agreed terms within the specified 14-day period starting from February 9, 2024.
