Anambra Governorship Election: APGA stands disqualified as INEC rejects the delegates’ list.

All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) risks disqualification from the Anambra governorship election as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) rebuffed the list of delegates submitted by the party for the primary election which was scheduled to hold on June 23, 2021.

In a supposed letter from INEC dated 16th June 2021 and signed by the secretary of the commission, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, the reason for this rejection was given to be the failure of the party to notify the commission of the date for the party’s Ward Congress where the ad-hoc delegates were elected.
“This is to notify you that the records of the commission indicate that APGA did not duly notify the commission of the date of the Congress where the ad-hoc delegates were elected as required by section 85 of the electoral acts of 2010 (as amended)”.

As a result of this, the commission expressed doubt on whether the list submitted follow due democratic process.
“Accordingly the commission is unable to confirm if the ad-hoc delegates list submitted by your party is the outcome of a democratic process as required by section 87 (7) of the electoral acts 2010 (as amended).

The implication of this is that APGA cannot conduct the primary which was already scheduled to be held on 23 June 2021, because according to the INEC guidelines, the list of the delegates must be sent to the commission seven (7) days before the primary election. Hence may ultimately not field any candidate in the forthcoming election.

INEC has also given the date for the primary election not to go beyond 1st of July, 2021.
