Olympic Qualifiers: Super Falcons Beat Cameroon, Through to Final Round

The Super Falcons of Nigeria edged out the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon with a slender 1-0 victory, propelling them into the final round of the Olympic qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Games.

The decisive match took place at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja on a tense Monday evening, February 26, 2024, concluding on a 1-0 aggregate following a goalless first leg in Cameroon.

The match’s solitary goal came from the boot of Esther Okoronkwo in the 14th minute, a moment that sparked jubilant celebrations among the Nigerian players and fans alike. The goal not only underscored Nigeria’s attacking prowess but also highlighted the team’s resilience and determination to secure a spot in the upcoming Olympics.

The encounter was not without its share of drama, as the Cameroonian team was reduced to ten players. Enganemben Annie received her marching orders after a reckless challenge on Chiamaka Nnadozie, leaving the Lionesses at a numerical disadvantage and ultimately unable to overturn the deficit.

Looking ahead, the Super Falcons’ quest for Olympic glory continues as they await their final-round opponents, which will be determined between South Africa and Tanzania. With one of two coveted tickets to Paris at stake in April, the Nigerian team remains focused and determined to make their mark on the international stage.
