Nationwide Hardship: Ukraine Sends Large Relief Packages to Nigeria

In a heartwarming display of international solidarity, the Government of Ukraine has made a significant contribution to the fight against hunger in Nigeria.

Through the World Food Programme (WFP), Ukraine has donated an impressive 25,000 metric tonnes of wheat.

This generous gesture is part of the “Grain from Ukraine” initiative, spearheaded by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, aimed at providing emergency food assistance to 1.3 million individuals affected by crises in the region.

David Stevenson, the WFP Representative and Country Director in Nigeria, announced the arrival of the shipment in Abuja on Thursday.

He highlighted the crucial role of collaborative efforts between various countries—including Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Luxembourg, Norway, the Republic of Korea, Sweden, and the United Kingdom—in covering the transportation costs of wheat from Ukraine to Nigeria.

The wheat is set to be swiftly distributed to families in dire need, as part of a broader strategy to address the basic food and nutrition requirements of crisis-affected communities over two months.
This collaborative initiative stands as a testament to the global commitment to alleviating suffering and preserving human dignity in conflict-ridden and food-insecure areas.

Northeast Nigeria, plagued by deadly conflicts and persistent violence, has seen millions displaced, agricultural and livelihood production jeopardized, and significant food price increases.

Recent months have witnessed unprecedented spikes in the prices of key staples, severely limiting access to food for vulnerable families reliant on harvests and markets. The region is also facing its fourth consecutive year of chronic food insecurity, with projections indicating that 26.5 million people could experience acute hunger during the 2024 lean season.

The WFP remains dedicated to partnering with the government and other stakeholders to develop more resilient, inclusive, and effective food systems. By leveraging its existing presence in Nigeria, the WFP aims to implement its “Out of Conflict into Solutions” approach to food systems, striving for a future where hunger is no longer a threat.
