Details as UNIJOS Students Protest Over Inadequate Water Supply, Lock Out Lecturers

Students of the University of Jos in Plateau State took a bold stand on Thursday, calling attention to the critical shortages of water and electricity in their hostels.

The peaceful protest saw students gathering in large numbers, effectively locking the university gates, and voicing their grievances through songs and placards. Messages like “No light to soak Garri” humorously, yet poignantly highlighted their plight, while empty buckets became powerful symbols of their struggle.

The lack of essential services has not only caused discomfort but has also severely hampered academic pursuits, according to the protesting students. The blockade resulted in many faculty and administrative staff being unable to enter the campus, further underlining the seriousness of the students’ concerns.

Addressing the issue, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, the Dean of Students Affairs, acknowledged the water and power crisis, attributing it to an unsettled bill with the Jos Electricity Distribution Company. However, he brought a glimmer of hope to the distressed students by announcing that the Vice Chancellor had stepped in to resolve the matter.

Thanks to the Vice Chancellor’s intervention, water supply to the hostels has been restored, and electricity is expected to follow suit shortly. Prof. Piwuna expressed optimism that with the restoration of power, the water supply issues would be permanently resolved, marking an end to the students’ immediate hardships.
