Buhari Speaks On releasing Nnamdi Kanu.

The president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has said he cannot release the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People Of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The president stated this during an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday night.

He said Kanu should defend himself in the court for spreading false information about him and his administration while he was away in Europe, while stating that he can’t interfere with the independence of the judiciary.

When asked about the possibility of a political solution, the President affirmed that there’s the possibility, but still maintained that Kanu must account for his verbal vituperation while in foreign country.

Recall that late last year, some respected Igbo elders led by Mbazulike Amaechi visited the President where they demanded the unconditional release of Kanu.

During the visit, the President had told them that their demand will be looked into though it’s a “heavy one”, adding that he doesn’t interfere with the judiciary.

Kanu was first arrested in 2017, but subsequently jumped bail and left for foreign country. He was re-arrested after about three years and extradited to Nigeria to continue his trial.

Upon his re-arrest, Kanu was re-arraigned before Justice Binta Nyako and will continue his trial on January 18, 2022.
