Nigeria Loses 84 as Lassa Fever Outbreak Rocks Country

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (NCDC) has reported a concerning increase in Lassa fever cases, with 84 fatalities spanning 23 states since the beginning of the year.

The outbreak’s severity became obvious when the Kaduna State Ministry of Health alerted the NCDC about potential viral hemorrhagic fever deaths at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna.
In response, the NCDC, alongside various institutions, has been diligently investigating these cases and bolstering their response efforts.

A critical measure taken includes monitoring and administering prophylactic medication to 25 individuals closely associated with the reported cases. Additionally, the Kaduna State Ministry of Health has initiated its Incident Management System, focusing on risk communication and community engagement to curb Lassa fever’s spread.

To combat this outbreak, the NCDC has leveraged its Incident Management System, enhancing the distribution of essential medical supplies to Lassa fever treatment centers nationwide. This initiative extends to training healthcare workers across different regions to strengthen the overall healthcare response.

In a bid to curtail the disease’s impact further, the NCDC is working closely with partners to develop a Lassa fever vaccine. Healthcare professionals are urged to remain vigilant for signs of the disease, ensuring any suspected cases are promptly reported for quick action.

Dr. Idris also highlighted the NCDC’s efforts in addressing other disease outbreaks, including meningitis, measles, diphtheria, and cholera, underscoring the importance of health security as a shared responsibility.

He emphasized the significant role of community engagement in promoting health and preventing disease spread.
