Economic Recession: NLC Proposes New Minimum Wage Amount For South-West Workers

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has set forth a proposal for a new minimum wage of N794,000 for workers in Nigeria’s South-West region.

This announcement, made during a public hearing of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage in Ikeja, Lagos, shows the urgent need for wage adjustments in light of the nation’s economic challenges.

Funmi Sessi, the chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the NLC, delivered this proposal, emphasizing that it represents a collective agreement among the union’s members in the South-West. The proposed wage is a substantial increase from the current national minimum wage of N30,000, which was instituted by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

This bold proposal comes at a time when discussions around the need for a revised minimum wage are intensifying across Nigeria. Workers and labor unions are increasingly vocal about the necessity for wages that reflect the current economic realities, including the rising cost of living and inflation rates.
