Nigerian High Court Sentences Chinese Man in Kano Over Girlfriend’s Murder

Kano State High Court has delivered justice in a high-profile case, sentencing Geng Quandong, a 47-year-old Chinese man, to death for the murder of his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Buhari.

The court, situated in Nigeria’s north-western region, found Quandong guilty of culpable homicide, a crime punishable by death according to Section 221 of the Penal Code Law of Kano State.The case, which has captivated the nation, centered on the tragic events of September 16, 2022, when Quandong fatally stabbed 23-year-old Buhari at her family home in Janbulo quarters, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano. The victim, affectionately known as “Ummita,” was actively serving her country in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the time of her untimely death.

According to reports, the fatal incident unfolded after Quandong forcefully entered the Buhari residence, pushing down Ummita’s mother before proceeding to her daughter’s room where he committed the heinous act. The young woman’s death has since left a void in the hearts of her family, friends, and the broader community, who mourn the loss of a vibrant life cut tragically short.

Ummita was laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites, her funeral attended by those who knew her and many who were moved by the tragic circumstances of her death.
