Anambra Government Launches Major Projects to Combat Erosion, Flooding Threats

In a beautiful move to tackle the severe erosion issue that has earned Anambra State the title of “erosion capital of the world,” the state’s Executive Council has recently greenlit several critical infrastructure projects.

One of the most urgent projects focuses on the Agu Awka GRA area, where gully erosion poses a threat to the Government House, nearby buildings, and local residents. The lack of proper floodwater management has been identified as a key factor exacerbating this situation.

Engineer Ifeanyi Okoma, the Commissioner for Works, presented a comprehensive proposal that led to the approval of a contract to reclaim and manage the flood and erosion at the affected site. CEFAC International Ltd secured the contract with a bid of N352,106,781.81. The project is expected to span 24 weeks, beginning from the mobilization date.

Moreover, the council has recognized the need to address potential risks to the Isuofia-Nanka road under construction. To prevent further erosion issues that could jeopardize this new road, a 685m stretch of road will also be constructed. AG Vision Construction Ltd was awarded this project for N393,500.

Further to these engineering efforts, the state is also investing in the safety and aesthetics of the State House of Assembly. Following its comprehensive renovation, additional security and landscaping measures are being introduced.

This includes the construction of a gatehouse, security posts, perimeter fencing, road asphalting, and the laying of kerbs. HEMEBS Construction Nigeria Ltd won this contract, valued at N184,656,501.12, with a completion timeline of three months from the start date.
