Reactions as Kano Police Arrests 11 Muslims Caught Eating During Ramadan

The Hisbah Board’s Department of Public Enlightenment in Kano State took action against individuals not observing the fast. On a recent Tuesday, Hisbah officials apprehended 11 Muslims, comprising 10 men and one woman, who were found eating during daylight hours, a time when fasting is obligatory for Muslims.

The individuals were detained following tips from the public, including a case involving a woman selling groundnuts, who was caught consuming her goods. The arrests predominantly took place in bustling areas near markets, as confirmed by Hisbah spokesman Lawal Fagge to the BBC. The enforcement efforts focus on Muslims, as non-Muslims are not subject to these fasting rules. However, there is a stipulation against non-Muslims selling food to Muslims who should be fasting.

Upon arrest, the individuals were released after committing to uphold the fasting requirements for the remainder of Ramadan. Some cases required the involvement of relatives or guardians to ensure adherence, emphasizing the importance of community and family in supporting religious observance.

This action aligns with the proclamation by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, marking the commencement of Ramadan as per the Islamic calendar. During this period, Muslims engage in a fast that includes abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and sexual activity during daylight hours, in addition to avoiding behaviors that are inconsistent with Islamic teachings.
