2023: PDP Chieftain Reacts To Meeting Between Wike, Other PDP Govs

2023: PDP Chieftain Reacts To Meeting Between Wike, Other PDP Govs

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Raymond Nnaji, has reacted to the meeting between Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and four of his colleagues.

Naija News reported that the five PDP governors met on Sunday in Enugu, the Enugu State capital for a strategy meeting to discuss the crisis rocking the party.

Aport from Wike, other governors present at the meeting were the host, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu, Governors Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, Samuel Ortom of Benue and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.

In a chat with The Punch on Sunday night, Nnaji slammed the five governors for plotting the downfall of the party ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The former National Auditor described the game the governors are playing as extremely dangerous which could be detrimental to the party’s success in 2023.

Nnaji said if the party fails to win the presidential election, it will have a bandwagon effect and would equally affect the governors individually.

He said, “The governors have candidates they will put in office, otherwise they will have a problem. All these things they are doing are just a waste of time. If PDP fails in the national (election), all of them will fail. It will have a bandwagon effect; there is no way they can make changes now.

“Ugwuanyi, for instance, is the senatorial candidate for Enugu North, there is no way he can decide to go to another party or support another party now.

Nnaji stated the meeting in Enugu is nothing but to play games, stating the idea was to show that they are still united in the quest to see the National Chairman, Iyrochia Ayu, leave office.

He said, “They are just playing games; that is the way I see it. They are looking for a way out of their problems because they have created problems thinking that they will make the changes but it is not working. So, if they pull the house down everybody will lose, including them.

“So, the meeting in Enugu is nothing but to play games. I believe they want to show that they are still intact. The party shouldn’t be afraid of their meeting. Let them continue to meet.”

4. 2023: Tinubu, Other APC Candidates May Be Disqualified From Participating In Election

There are fears that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu may be disqualified from participating in the 2023 elections.

Not only Tinubu, but it is also understood that other candidates of the party including the Ekiti State Governor-elect, Abiodun Oyebanji may be affected.

The fear stems from the Friday ruling by Justice Emeka Nwite of a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja which nullified the nomination of Governor Isiaka Oyetola and his running mate, Benedict Alabi, as APC candidates for the 2022 Osun State governorship election.

Naija News recalls their candidature was nullified on the ground that Governor Mai Mala Buni who submitted their names to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) violated the provisions of Section 183 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Section 82(3) of the Electoral Act 2022.

Based on this, some political observers are of the opinion that all actions of Buni while in office as the APC caretaker National Chairman may be invalidated.

But the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Barrister Felix Morka ruled out any such happening, stating that the judgement of the high court does not hold water.

He told Sunday Tribune that the party is very confident the Court of Appeal will set aside the ruling of the lower court on the matter.

The presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), Malik Ado-Ibrahim has been summoned by the party over plans for the 2023 election.

A statement on Sunday by the YPP National Secretary, Egbeola Wale-Martins said the decision to summon Ado-Ibrahim was taken after the party’s 20th national working committee (NWC) meeting in Abuja.

He added that the gap in communication between the presidential candidate, the party leadership and its organs seem to have slowed down preparations for next year’s elections and hampered the expected fortunes of the YPP.

The National Secretary also stated that the outcome of the briefing from the presidential candidate would determine the next line of action to be taken by the party.

6. Strike: Ngige Leaves Meeting After Heated Argument With ASUU President During Negotiation

Naija News reports that all stakeholders were properly represented at the meeting summoned as part of efforts to find a solution to the lingering ASUU strike which has kept the students of Nigeria’s public universities at home since February 14.

The various stakeholders including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha made various submissions on how to resolve the lingering crisis.

However, in the course of the meeting, Ngige accused the ASUU president of saying the All Progressives Congress (APC) government had kept children at home and that the Nigerian people should vote them out.

The accusation by the Minister was however refuted by the ASUU camp and some others at the meeting.

The accusation also infuriated the ASUU leadership and led to a rowdy session in which Ngige was called a liar who is fond of misinforming the public by Prof. Osodeke.

The Minister however walked out of the meeting even as both of them continued exchanging heated words.

IPOB stated this via a statement issued and made available to newsmen.

Ejiofor urged members of the public to go about their normal activities and ignore the said directive.

Ejiofor went on to dismiss speculations that Kanu will appear at Federal High Court Umuahia, Abia State, next Tuesday when a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed on his behalf is scheduled to be held.

This is as the group stated that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar was not capable of stopping the IPOB movement.

FG Gives Update On 2nd Niger Bridge Project And Launch

FG Gives Update On 2nd Niger Bridge Project And Launch

The federal government has announced that the 2nd Niger-bridge project would be ready for launch by the first quarter of 2024.

The disclosure was made on Saturday by the acting federal controller of works in Anambra State, Seyi Martins, Naija News reports.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari-led government through the minister of power, works and housing, Babatunde Fashola, announced in November 2016 that it awarded a sum of N206 billion to Julius Berger Construction Company for the completion of the 2nd Niger Bridge.

The government had earlier revealed that the project would be officially commissioned in December 2022. It, however, noted that the bridge would be opened for access by 2024, due to the second phase of work, a 3.3km road approach, on the Delta side and a 7km road approach on the Anambra side that was yet to commence.

Naija News reports that Martins revealed this while playing host to members of the Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria on the bridge over the weekend.

According to the official, work has gone far on the facility and it’s already on 95 per cent completion. He pointed out that the first phase of the project had been substantially completed, saying that what was left was the final asphalt surfacing, on the Asaba-bound carriageway lane.

According to him, the bridge which would be about 1.7km parallel to the existing bridge, would be a dual carriageway with three lanes on both sides measuring about 1.6km in length while the total length of the project would be 11.9km.

The acting controller further said that the steel guard rails had been completed, while the roads were set for vehicle traffic with the toll plaza area almost completed.

He said, “The bridge project is 95 per cent complete and it is expected to be commissioned by the end of December 2022, but there is a second phase which is a 3.3km road approach on the Delta side and 7km of approach road on the Anambra side that is yet to commence.

“The bridge can be accessed from the interchange at Oba on Onitsha-Owerri road. A road is being constructed to connect traffic on the Asaba-Benin Expressway pending the completion of the second phase.

“The second phase of the project is yet to commence, but the government has deemed it fit that upon completion of the first phase, it will be open to traffic.

“At the Onitsha end, there is an interchange at Oba, where you can access the bridge and on the Asaba end, there is a link road we are constructing to enable travellers to access the bridge from Benin-Onitsha road.”

On his part, the Chairman, COREN, Victor Meju, commended the contractor for a job well done. He expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done so far.

Meju said COREN leadership was concerned with ensuring that engineers working on projects in Anambra were certified. He expressed satisfaction with the extent of work done so far, while commending the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for the commitment shown to deliver the job as scheduled.

He noted that the bridge when completed, would not only boost the economic activities of the South-East and South-South but for the whole country.

He said, “What we have observed today is impressive. We are happy that our members, local engineers, were generously used in this project.

“We thank the federal government and the government of Anambra and Delta states for their efforts at seeing that the project come this far. We are confident that the bridge will increase the business activities in the area.”

Independence Day: Oba Of Benin Writes FG Over ASUU Strike

Independence Day: Oba Of Benin Writes FG Over ASUU Strike

Nigeria’s 62nd Independence Day celebration may have been more meaningful if the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had settled their differences, said His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, Oba of Benin.

Naija News reports that the renowned monarch joined other patriotic Nigerians in a statement to reflect the status of the country as it marked another anniversary.

The Oba of Benin expressed dissatisfaction with the lingering industrial action by the varsity lecturers over the actions and inactions of the government on the union’s demands.

The monarch, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Osaigbovo Iguobaro, said the over seven-month-old strike has disrupted the academic calendars of public universities.

Oba of Benin, thereby charged the federal government and ASUU to as a matter of urgency, find amicable solutions to put an end to the lingering strike.

The Oba said that “the independence celebration may not offer much pageantry to some citizens, the mere fact that the nation has remained one indivisible sovereignty, despite daunting challenges, deserves a compliment.”

He noted that the resilience of some Nigerians may have made the nation proud and those who paid the supreme sacrifice for Nigeria’s survival since independence from Britain, deserve mention.

The Benin monarch expressed hope that Nigeria will be better again with prayers and hard work despite the economic hardship, insecurity, conflicts, endless agitations and other challenges faced.

He advised contemporary leaders to always aspire to make an impact through leadership skills, especially with a sense of responsibility and patriotism by citizens for the nation to truly attain its status as the giant of Africa both in practice and principle.

Commenting on the forthcoming general elections, the Oba advised Nigerians to support the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deliver credible, free and fair elections in 2023.

The Oba of Benin said: “Political actors, especially those in governments and other stakeholders should play by the rules. Eligible voters should shun vote buying to deepen our democratic values.

“Nigerians should unite against our common enemies that have hindered the progress of the nation by denouncing evil, poverty, unemployment, corruption, crime, insurgency and economic sabotage particularly oil theft and double-standard in the application of the Law of the Land” the revered Benin monarch re-echoed on the occasion of the 62nd independence anniversary of Nigeria.”

I Am Glad I Did Not Reject Pregnancies Outside Wedlock – Nollywood Actor, 2pac Igwe

Popular Nollywood actor, Charles Okocha also known as Igwe 2pac has said that he is thankful he did not reject pregnancies outside wedlock.

Okocha during an interview with Punch revealed how joyful he was about his decision to step up to his responsibilities despite not being ready to be a father.

He revealed that he has two children; a son and a daughter from two different women but people are not aware that the children are not from the same mothers because of the bond they share.

He went on to give a detailed story of how he asked his girlfriend to abort his daughter when she found out that she was pregnant. He stated that she, however, refused to listen to him and decided to have the baby.

Igwe explained that when she decided to keep the baby, he stepped up to his responsibility and made sure he took care of his daughter.

He said, “I guess having those kids was a blessing, even if it was out of wedlock and I never wanted them. It wasn’t something I wanted at that time. I even suggested abortion to my girlfriend when she told me that she was pregnant, I won’t lie. I did that but I owned up to my action of getting her pregnant and I never disputed for once. I suggested that because I wasn’t prepared or ready for that but she went ahead to tell her mum about it and when my mum eventually got to know about the situation, she took her (my girlfriend) in and took good care of her until she was delivered of my baby. My mum took care of everything for my daughter and it was the same for my son. They had no reason to lack. I don’t only take care of my kids, I also take care of their mothers.

“Because I take good care of my baby-mamas (the mothers of my children), they had no reason to come to say any wrong about me. We communicate well and one of them is even married now. Marriage was not a very thing at that point. She moved on because she felt she wasn’t getting any younger at that point and it’s okay but what I won’t accept is having another man take up my responsibility. That’s why I work very hard and do things to put food on the table and make my kids live a better life.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had filed the suit against Governor Buni, Governor Oyetola and others.

The provisions of Section 183 read in part: “The Governor, shall not, during the period he holds office, hold any other executive office or paid employment in any capacity whatsoever.”

Based on this, some political observers are of the opinion that all actions of Buni while in office as the APC caretaker National Chairman may be invalidated.

Some of the actions include the signing of the nomination of Ekiti governor-elect Abiodun Oyebanji, as APC candidate for the June 18, 2022 poll in the state, and the conduct of the party’s elective national convention which produced the current NWC.

The development may also lead to the disqualification of all APC candidates for the 2023 poll who emerged from the primaries conducted by the Abdullahi Adamu-led National Working Committee heralded by the Buni leadership of the party.

Should the court order lead to the invalidation of the actions of the NWC due to the involvement of Buni, then all candidates produced and other actions would be deemed null and void.

But the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Barrister Felix Morka ruled out any such happening, stating that the judgement of the high court does not hold water.

He told Sunday Tribune that the party is very confident the Court of Appeal will set aside the ruling of the lower court on the matter.

He said: ”The judgment of the Court is unsupportable. We are confident that the Court of Appeal will upturn the judgment.

“It isn’t supportable by fact of law. What the Governor Buni Caretaker did was ratified by Convention, which is the highest organ of the Party. The Court didn’t avert itself to the fact of the matter.

“So, there is nothing to worry about. That decision will be challenged and we are confident that the Court of Appeal will upturn it.”

EPL: Wolves Cut Ties With Bruno Lage After Four Defeat

EPL: Wolves cut ties with Bruno Lage

After 16 months in charge, Wolves have made a decision to part ways with Bruno Lage following Saturday’s loss to West Ham United which dropped the club into the bottom three.

The Portuguese manager who became the third manager to succeed Nuno Espirito Santo last summer led Wolves to a 10th-placed finish in his first season in charge.

However, in their last 15 Premier League games under the former Benfica Manager, Wolves have won only one and lost nine.

The club shared the announcement on its social media pages, thanking Bruno and his coaching staff for their work while they were employed by the club and wishing them the best of luck in the future.

“Wolves have parted company with head coach Bruno Lage. We would like to thank Bruno and his coaching team for their efforts during their time at the club and wish them the very best for the future.” the club tweeted.

According to the BBC, Wolves Chairman Jeff Shi said that Lage’s poor play left him with no choice but to make the painful decision to fire him.

“Bruno is an excellent coach, a hardworking and dedicated manager, and a warm, wise and honest man,” said the chairman.

“He and his staff have been a pleasure to work with throughout their time at Wolves, so it is with much sadness that we have had to make what has been a difficult decision.

“I honestly have no doubts about Bruno’s ability and I’m sure he will succeed elsewhere, however the team’s form and performances over the last few months mean that we have no choice but to act,” he said.

Wolves third Premier League manager, Terry Connor will tentatively replace the Portuguese and lead the team to Stamford bridge next Saturday.
