“Why You Should Release Nnamdi Kanu”- Nigerian Catholic Bishops Petitions Tinubu

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has advocated for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the head of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), suggesting that his release could pave the way for both economic and security improvements in Nigeria’s southeastern region.

The call was articulated by Most Reverend Lucius Ugorji, the CBCN’s president, during a recent ceremony in Imo State. He underscored the belief that Kanu’s release could effectively address the persistent stay-at-home orders in the southeast, which have been exacerbated by his ongoing detention. These orders have significantly hampered the region’s economic and social life.

This appeal follows closely on the heels of a Federal High Court decision in Abuja, where Justice Binta Nyako denied Kanu’s request for bail. Despite this setback, the court has expedited the hearing of Kanu’s case, which involves charges related to terrorism.

Kanu has been in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) following his controversial arrest and forcible return from Kenya in June 2021. The Supreme Court had noted earlier that Kanu’s arrest involved illegalities, including the use of excessive force and his extraordinary rendition, but also mentioned that there was a potential for civil remedies.

In light of these events, the CBCN is urging President Tinubu to consider these civil remedies favorably, aiming to alleviate the economic and security distress faced by the southeastern population due to Kanu’s prolonged detention.
