Why Six Labour Party House Of Assembly Members In Enugu Defect To PDP

Six members of the House of Assembly, previously affiliated with the Labour Party (LP), have officially joined the ranks of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

This move was formalized through a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House, Hon. Uche Ugwu, signaling a pivotal moment in the state’s political dynamics.

The defectors include prominent figures such as the House Chief Whip, Hon. Ejike Eze from Igboeze North I, and the House Leader, Hon. Johnson Ugwu from Enugu North. They are joined by Hon. Princess Ugwu of Enugu South Rural, Hon. Pius Ezugwu of Nsukka West, Hon. Amuka Williams of Igbo-Etiti West, and Hon. Osita Eze of Oji River. This group of lawmakers has not only changed their political allegiance but has also shifted the balance of power within the House, propelling the PDP from a minority status to holding the majority.

The anticipation and rumors surrounding their defection had been a buzzing topic across social media platforms in Enugu for over a month. Now confirmed, their decision has ignited a wave of reactions, particularly among supporters of the Labour Party. Critics argue that the defectors have betrayed the electorate’s trust, especially considering the significant support the LP candidates received in the 2023 general elections, largely attributed to the “Obidients” movement in Enugu State. Accusations of betrayal and demands for the defectors to resign their positions have surfaced, with critics insisting that mandates given under the Labour Party banner should not be transferred to the PDP.

Social media posts from aggrieved LP supporters have called out the defectors by name, expressing disappointment and alleging that inducements may have influenced their decision to switch parties.

The sentiment among many is that the defectors have reneged on their commitments to represent the interests of their constituents and the broader goals of the Labour Party. Calls for accountability and adherence to constitutional guidelines on party defection are growing louder, with the Enugu electorate watching closely.
