BREAKING: Detained Binance Executive, Tigran Sues EFCC, Others

Tigran Gambaryan, the Binance executive detained by the Nigerian government has sued the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu and the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the alleged violation of his fundamental rights.

His lawsuit, prepared by Olujoke Aliyu of Aluko and Oyebode Law Firm, asserts that his detention and the seizure of his passport are in direct violation of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, infringing upon his right to personal liberty.

Gambaryan’s lawsuit seeks several remedies, including immediate release from custody, the return of his passport, and a perpetual injunction to prevent further detention in relation to Binance investigations. Additionally, he demands a public apology and coverage of legal costs, emphasizing that his detention stems solely from the Nigerian government’s demands on Binance rather than any wrongdoing on his part.

In a separate but related matter, Nadeem Anjarwalla, who managed to escape from custody under dramatic circumstances, has also filed for the enforcement of his rights before the same court. Anjarwalla’s escape, facilitated during a mosque visit for Ramadan prayers, prompted the NSA’s office to announce efforts to secure an international arrest warrant through Interpol, highlighting the case’s complexities and the broader implications for international business operations and diplomatic relations.

The court, presided over by Justice Inyang Ekwo, has adjourned both cases until April 8, allowing time for legal representations to be sorted and for the respondents to prepare their defense.
