Drama Unfolds as Biden’s 2024 Campaign Adopts Trump’s Name-calling Tactics, Others

In a notable twist for the 2024 presidential race, President Joe Biden’s campaign has taken a page from former President Donald Trump’s playbook by engaging in name-calling.

A recent email from Biden’s team dubbed Trump “Broke Don,” alluding to his recent financial and legal challenges, particularly the inability to delay a $464 million payment connected to a civil investigation into The Trump Organization.

Trump is known for his memorable, if controversial, nicknames for opponents, including “Lyin’ Ted” Cruz, “Little Marco” Rubio, and “Crooked Hillary” Clinton. In continuing this trend, the Biden campaign’s email criticized Trump for his fundraising struggles, the absence of active campaigning, and for the allegedly disorganized state of his campaign team, which the email suggests is comprised of convicts and conspiracy theorists.

This strategic move marks a departure from Biden’s previous public image and suggests an escalation in the rhetoric surrounding the upcoming election. The email even references Trump’s past attacks on Biden, particularly the claim that Biden was “hiding” in his basement during the 2020 campaign.

Despite the jabs, Trump’s campaign reported raising $20 million in February, with Biden’s campaign leading with a $53 million haul. As March began, Biden’s campaign boasted a significant financial advantage, with $155 million on hand compared to Trump’s $41.9 million.

The “Broke Don” moniker was highlighted in a tweet by Reuters correspondent Nandita Bose, drawing further attention to the Biden campaign’s aggressive new messaging strategy.

Responses to this tactic have been mixed. Political strategist Ashley Hayek criticized the Biden campaign for its approach, suggesting it might remind voters of perceived overreaches by Biden’s administration. Meanwhile, Trump’s campaign communications director, Steven Cheung, responded with sharp criticism, hinting at a contentious campaign ahead.
