BREAKING: Abure’s Committee Dismissed as LP BoT Takes Over Party Affairs

The Labour Party (LP) is currently experiencing vital shifts in its leadership structure, with the Board of Trustees (BoT) declaring that it has assumed control of the party’s operations.

This move comes in the wake of what the BoT has termed a “charade” convention that saw Julius Abure re-elected as the national chairman. In an effort to maintain stability and avoid a leadership vacuum following the expiration of Abure’s term, the BoT, led by chairman Silvester Ejiofor, announced its intervention on Wednesday.

The BoT’s action aligns with the party’s constitution, underlining its commitment to guiding the Labour Party through this transition period. A key factor in this decision is a 2018 Federal High Court consent judgment which recognizes the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as the party’s owner and calls for an inclusive national convention.

Amidst this backdrop, the BoT is also honoring a 2022 agreement involving the former national chairman, the NLC, and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), facilitated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This agreement underscores the importance of conducting a transparent and wide-reaching national convention to decide the party’s future leadership.

The BoT has expressed gratitude towards LP members, including workers, students, youths, market women and men, and especially the “Obidients,” for their dedication to the party’s ideals. There is a promise to swiftly initiate the process for a truly inclusive national convention, reaffirming the Labour Party’s commitment to democratic principles and the socio-political advancement of Nigeria.

Emphasizing the need for a process that involves the grassroots, the BoT plans to conduct congresses at all levels – from wards to local governments, states, and finally, a national convention. This approach aims to ensure that every member has a voice in shaping the party’s future, with oversight from INEC, media, civil society, security agencies, and the public eye.
