More Drama as INEC Declines Recognition of Labour Party’s National Convention

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced its disengagement from the Labour Party’s national convention held in Anambra State, emphasizing that the event did not receive its monitoring.

This revelation came through a statement from Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, during an interaction with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). The reasons for INEC’s absence at the convention were not disclosed, however, it aligns with ongoing reports by SaharaReporters detailing the internal strife within the Labour Party.

The roots of this disassociation can be traced back to warnings issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) against the validation of what it considered an unauthorized convention. The NLC, through letters dated March 22, 2024, addressed to INEC and the Labour Party’s National Legal Adviser, expressed its intent to initiate legal action should the convention proceed, citing contempt of court based on two judgements from the Federal High Court.

The NLC has been vocal about its discontent with the Labour Party’s leadership, particularly under Julius Abure, accusing them of financial mismanagement and disrespect towards the NLC’s authority. This led to the NLC picketing Labour Party offices nationwide, emphasizing the party’s roots within the labor union.

Legal documents reveal that the proposed convention contravenes court orders in ongoing lawsuits between the Labour Party and various parties, including Julius Abure. The NLC threatened not only to pursue contempt proceedings but also to report involved legal officers to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for undermining the rule of law.

Despite these controversies, the Labour Party proceeded with its convention, originally planned in Umuahia, Abia State, before being relocated to Nnewi, Anambra State. The Labour Party’s National Legal Adviser, Mr. Kehinde Edun, stated that the party had informed INEC about the venue change, asserting their freedom to choose the convention’s location.
