Reactions as Lagos High Court Grants Ex-CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele Bail

The former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has been granted bail by the Lagos State High Court.The bail sum is set at N50 million naira.

This decision follows allegations against Emefiele involving multiple charges of corruption amounting to millions of dollars and naira, as detailed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The EFCC has disclosed 18 out of 26 corruption charges against Emefiele, involving significant financial discrepancies. Both Emefiele and his associate, Henry Isioma Omoile, faced arraignment at the Special Offences Court in Ikeja on Monday. Moreover, further proceedings are scheduled in Abuja between April 25 and 26, 2024, as stated by Emefiele’s legal representative.

The decision to grant bail was made by Justice Rahman Oshodi, who specified that Emefiele must provide two sureties matching the bail amount. The conditions set by Justice Oshodi for the sureties include gainful employment and proof of three years’ tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

Moreover, the sureties are required to present valid identification and must be registered in the Lagos State Bail Management system.
