Zamfara Varsity Students, Staff Regain Freedom From Bandits After 7 Months

Students and staff of the Federal University Gusau in Zamfara State, who bandits had taken hostage, have successfully regained their freedom.

Naija News reports that the individuals were abducted during an assault in the Gusau area back in February of this year.

After several efforts made for their rescue, the individuals finally returned alive after spending seven months with their abductors.

Their freedom was confirmed in a post on social media by Zagazola Makama, a popular security analyst and counter-insurgency specialist.

He said: “Abducted students of Federal University Gusau and staff regain freedom.”

However, details about how they regained freedom remain sketchy as at the time of filing this report.

Zagazola, though quoted sources as saying that security forces played a pivotal role in securing the victims’ freedom.

“It was gathered that the students and staff were kidnapped during an attack by bandits in the Gusau area in February of this year,” Zagazola wrote on his X account.

The news brings relief to families and the academic community who have been waiting for the safe return of their loved ones.

Zagazola added, “After spending an extended period in captivity, it has been confirmed that all the abducted individuals have returned in good health.”

In September 2023, it was reported that a large group of bandits had taken a considerable number of students from the Federal University of Gusau, located in Zamfara State.

A local from Sabon Gida village, Abubakar Sani, had told newsmen that the bandits, numbering in the hundreds, invaded the students’ living spaces outside the university.

He mentioned that the majority of the students taken were women.

Sani mentioned that the bandits entered the region around 4:00 am, where they assaulted three students’ dormitories.
