Russia Deploys Military Instructors to Niger to Train Local Forces,Others
A Russian military cargo aircraft recently delivered a team of military instructors along with various types of equipment to Niger, aiming to bolster the Nigerien army’s counterterrorism capabilities.
This move follows a direct conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Abdourahmane Tchiani, chairman of Niger’s National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland.
The team, which arrived in Niamey, Niger’s capital, on a late Wednesday evening, was showcased by the Nigerian state broadcaster RTN during the unloading of an IL-76 aircraft. The Russian delegation includes seasoned military specialists equipped to enhance local forces’ operational effectiveness, particularly in counterterrorism.
A key aspect of this military cooperation involves the installation of an air defense system, a strategic enhancement for Niger’s military infrastructure. Russian instructors are set to provide intensive training to ensure the Nigerien forces are well-prepared to operate this advanced technology effectively.
The arrival of these instructors marks a pivotal shift in Niger’s international military partnerships. Following a coup in late July 2023, which saw the presidential guard overthrow President Mohamed Bazoum, Niger has seen significant changes in its foreign military relations.
The new military-led government, under Tchiani, declared an end to all military agreements with France, coinciding with the completion of the withdrawal of French forces by the end of December 2023.
