Five dead in Jigawa canoe accident, police begin rescue effort

Five people have died in a canoe accident in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The tragedy occurred around noon on Thursday when a canoe carrying 20 passengers capsized while crossing the Gamoda River near Nahuce village.
The Jigawa State Police Command, in a statement, said that after receiving a distress call, a team of police officers, local divers, and Good Samaritans rushed to the scene for a rescue operation.
“Regretfully, five of the passengers were found dead,” stated the police spokesperson, Lawan Shiisu Adam.
The victims have been identified as Abdurra’uf Mohd, 15; Suleman Ali, 20; Shafiu Mohd, 25; Ado Nafance, 75; and Alasan Mohd, 16—all from Taura LGA. Rescue efforts are ongoing for the remaining passengers.
Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, Amad Abdullahi, has expressed his deep condolences to the families of the victims. “We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the immediate families of the deceased and pray for the departed souls to find eternal peace,” he said.
This incident highlights the dangers associated with water transportation, especially in rural areas where such methods are commonly used to cross rivers. The police have assured the public that they will work closely with local authorities to improve safety measures and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
