Exposed! Real Reveal Nigerian Women Are Not Active In Politics

Nigerian women under the aegis of National Council for Women Society (NCWS) have harped on the need for political meetings to be held in day time to enable married female politicians actively participate in politics.

President of NCWS, Dr Gloria Shoda, made this demand while speaking with newsmen at a one-day stakeholders’ engagement on Enhancing Women’s Participation in the Political Process in Nigeria, on Monday, in Abuja.

She explained that because of the cultural background that did not allow women to be out late at nights, they were always absent at nocturnal political meetings where important decisions were taken.

Naija News is aware that most caucus meetings in Nigeria where critical political decisions are taken, are usually scheduled for the dead of the night and continue into the wee hours of the morning

Shoda was represented by Dr Nwanganga Ibeh, the President South-East Professional Women Association of Nigeria at the event, which was organised by National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in collaboration with the  European Union (EU).

According to her, “In our culture, we know that women are not supposed to stay out late or come home very late, most marriages pack up when women become very actively involved in politics”.

The NCWS President continued that this was especially so if such women gave in to attending late night political meetings where importance decisions were taken.

She said, “And we know that when they do not turn up for these night meetings where important decisions are taken, they are just left off.

“So I want to advocate that for women in politics to be effectively active in policy making and political party activities.

“Political meetings should hold when it is reasonable for a married woman to attend.

“Because we are in a changing and challenging world where violence is becoming the order of the day, political meetings should be held in the day time.”

Shoda insisted that there was the need to recognise that the world had changed, adding “we need to create new policies that aee viable and attainable in line with the new world order”.
