EFCC Investigates More Celebrities for Naira Abuse Following Bobrisky’s Jail Sentence
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of Nigeria is intensifying its scrutiny on celebrity involvement in naira abuse, a move that comes in the wake of the conviction of well-known socialite Bobrisky, whose real name is Idris Okuneye.
Bobrisky was recently sentenced to six months in prison by a Federal High Court in Lagos for mishandling the national currency, a charge that sparked widespread discussion about the selectivity of the agency’s actions.
EFCC’s continued efforts to crack down on currency abuse were confirmed through a statement from their Head of Media & Publicity, Mr. Dele Oyewale. The statement highlighted ongoing investigations into several celebrities, with many already having provided valuable information to the commission. More individuals are expected to be called in for questioning as the EFCC pledges to maintain its rigorous enforcement stance.
The agency acknowledged the circulation of old videos showcasing potential naira abuse but noted its Special Task Force against Naira Abuse and Dollarization had only been operational since February 7, 2024. Moving forward, any new evidence of such infractions will lead to investigations and possible prosecutions, reinforcing the EFCC’s commitment to uphold the law without exceptions.
