Nigeria’s D’Tigress sealed a place in the quarter-finals of the women’s basketball event at the 2024 Olympic Games on Sunday.
The West Africans defeated Canada 79-70 in their last group game.
Rena Wakama’s side started the game on the front foot and had a 10-point lead at some point but allowed the Canadians back into the game.
The two teams could not be separated at the end of the first quarter, sharing spoils 18-18.
D’Tigress went into the break still very much in the game, trailing their opponents by only four points (41-37).
The African champions rallied in the third quarter to lead 55-46.
Nigeria won 79-70 at the end of the game.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has warmly congratulated the team on qualifying for the quarter-final of the women’s basketball at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Tinubu, in a statement by his spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, commended the team for their uncommon demonstration of resilience, teamwork and diligence.
He also commended the coach and managers of the team for their dutifulness and dedication.
The President enjoined the brave Tigress not to rest on their oars until the final victory is won.
He also assured the team and the entire Nigerian contingent at the 2024 Olympics of his support as they fly the nation’s flag at the global sports event.
