BREAKING: Ramadan Fasting to Begin Monday in Nigeria, Sultan of Sokoto Confirms Crescent Sighting

On the evening of Sunday, March 10, 2024, an important announcement was made by Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA). From his Usmaniyyah Palace in Sokoto, Sokoto State, he declared that Monday, March 11, 2024, would mark the beginning of Ramadan 1445AH, officially initiating the fasting period for the holy month.

This announcement followed reports from Muslim leaders and organizations throughout Nigeria, who observed the new moon of Ramadan, marking the conclusion of Sha’aban 1445AH. These sightings were thoroughly verified and authenticated by both state and national moon sighting committees, affirming the start of Ramadan.

The Sultan emphasized the significance of this period, urging the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria to begin their fasts accordingly. He stressed the importance of utilizing this holy month for additional prayers, especially for the nation’s leaders and for Nigeria’s well-being, urging for greater devotion in the worship of Almighty Allah.

He also called upon the Muslim community to support those facing hardship by sharing food and assistance, particularly urging those with means to help the less fortunate during this sacred time.In preparation for this, a statement issued by the NSCIA on March 8, 2024, underlined the importance of the moon sighting. If the crescent were sighted by individuals of impeccable character on the evening of March 10, then the fast would begin on March 11. Otherwise, it would commence on March 12. This procedure underscores the adherence to traditional practices and the significance of the moon in determining the Islamic calendar.

The NSCIA’s statement also highlighted the month of Ramadan as a period of revelation and guidance, a time for fasting, reflection, and community. It called on Muslims to extend charity and support to those in need, cautioning against hoarding and price gouging, which could exacerbate the hardships of the less fortunate.
