AFCON: Emotional Super Eagles Vow to Lift Trophy as Tribute to Deceased Fans

In an emotional tribute, the Super Eagles have vowed to win the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) final in honor of fans who tragically lost their lives during the team’s semi-final victory over South Africa. The Nigerian national team’s commitment came after the devastating news that four fans died under heartbreaking circumstances while watching the match on Wednesday.

Team captain Ahmed Musa, in a heartfelt video message, expressed the team’s sorrow over the loss of “four good Nigerians” and declared a minute of silence to honor their memory. Musa emphasized the importance of supporting the bereaved families during this challenging time and made a solemn vow: “Insha Allah on Sunday, we are going to lift that trophy for them.”

Among those who passed away was Cairo Ojougboh, a former Executive Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), marking a profound loss for the community.

The video also showed the coach Jose Peseiro and members of his coaching staff holding a minute silence in their honour.

A short prayer led by Chidozie Awaziem also followed the tribute where the 27-year-old central defender who plays for Primeira Liga club Boavista asked for God’s protection of Nigerians who will watch the Sunday’s final between them and hosts Côte d’Ivoire.
