Why Senate meeting ended in fracas today.

The Senate sitting on Thursday ended in fracas as many Senators disagree with the decision concerning the mode of transmission of results by the Independent Electoral Commission-INEC, on election day.

DeErudite communication gathered that trouble started when the Senator attempted to amend Clause 52 (3) of the new Electoral Act.

The joint National Assembly Committee on INEC and Electoral Matters has recommended that the power to transmit results by electronic means where applicable on the day of election should rest on INEC.

However, Senator Sabi Abdullahi of Niger North suggested that the duty to determine how practicable it is to transmit election results through electronic means should be reserved for the Nigerian Communications Commission with the approbation of the National Assembly.

The Senate President, Ahmed Lawal subsequently ruled in favour of the Niger North Senator which provoked tumult and uproar, especially from the Southern Senators.

After about 20 minutes of futile trial to return normalcy to the House, the Senate President was forced to call for a closed session.
