A former Minister of Aviation and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Femi Fani-Kayode, has described as insulting, irresponsible and despicable a comment made by the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

Naija News had reported earlier that Atiku while speaking in Kaduna State on Saturday, charged northerners not to vote for a Yoruba or Igbo presidential candidate in 2023. Atiku said Northerners need to vote for him rather than a Yoruba or Igbo candidate because he’s a Pan-Nigerian with a northern extraction that has built bridges across the country. He said: “What the average Northerner needs is somebody who’s from the north and also understands that part of the country and has been able to build bridges across the country. “This is what the Northerner needs. It doesn’t need a Yoruba or Igbo candidate. I stand before you as a Pan-Nigerian of northern origin.” Angered by the comments, Fani-Kayode, who took to his Twitter handle, stated that a northern Fulani cannot be allowed to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari, who is also a northern Fulani and has spent eight years in office. Fani-Kayode, who is the Director of Special Duties and New Media of the APC presidential campaign council, warned that southerners are not slaves and they would not be cheated. He said Atiku would not be allowed to treat Nigerians as he did to Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State. Femi Fani-Kayode wrote: “The North does not need a Yoruba or Igbo President: she needs a Northern President – Atiku Abubakar. “Such tomfoolery is rarely seen even from the worst amongst us. “Atiku’s words are not only unacceptable but also insulting, irresponsible, and despicable. “This is especially so given the fact that by next year we would have had eight years of Northern/Fulani rule, and now this man says we must have another eight years of it because that is what is ‘best for the North.’ “Most Northerners do not believe this, and thankfully they, unlike Atiku and members of his divided party, do not see Southerners as slaves, and they regard us all as being equal. “We will not allow Atiku to do to Nigeria what he did to Wike. “We will not be cheated or denied. “It is time for power to shift to the South, and the overwhelming number of people in the North and certainly all the Northerners in the APC believe that.”
