WAEC Releases Results of 2023 Private Candidates, Gives Details of Performances, Others
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the release of the results for the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates in Nigeria.
WAEC disclosed this while giving the details of their performances.
It states that a total of 80,904 candidates sat for the examination, with 39,790 being males and 41,114 females.
Also, 46,267 candidates (57.19%) obtained credit and above in at least five subjects, with or without English Language and/or Mathematics. Furthermore, 35,830 candidates (44.29%) obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
Of the candidates who achieved this feat, 17,631 (49.21%) were male, while 18,199 (50.79%) were female. This marks a slight increase of 2.13% from the previous year’s performance.
However, it is important to note that the examination for private candidates differs from that for school candidates, as private candidates have the flexibility to register for fewer subjects to address specific deficiencies.
WAEC also reported that 7,192 candidates (8.89%) had their results withheld due to suspected cases of examination malpractice. Investigations are ongoing, and affected candidates will be informed of the outcomes.
The examination took place between October 27, 2023, and December 20, 2023, across 568 centers in Nigeria. The coordination and marking of candidates’ scripts were conducted from January 16 to January 30, 2024, involving 4,162 examiners at seven marking venues.
The total number of candidates who entered the examination in 2023 increased by 10.07% compared to 2022, with 85,600 candidates registering for the exam.
Finally, the 2023 WASSCE results for private candidates show a commendable performance, with a significant number of candidates achieving credit passes in crucial subjects like Mathematics and English Language, signaling a positive trend in the educational landscape.
