UPDATES: EFCC Nabs Dozens of Students in Massive Invasion of Nigerian University
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) made headlines with the arrest of 50 persons, including 48 students from the Kwara State University (KWASU), for alleged involvement in internet fraud.
The operation, carried out by the Ilorin Zonal Command of the EFCC, targeted various hideouts in Malete, Moro Local Government Area, Kwara State, following extensive surveillance and intelligence gathering.
The arrests emphasize the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to curb internet-related offenses, a commitment that led to the seizure of nine exotic cars, twenty-four laptops, and numerous mobile phones from the suspects. This operation highlights the agency’s resolve to tackle cybercrime head-on.
However, the operation did not go without incident. Reports indicate that a subsequent raid on the university’s off-campus hostels met with resistance from some students.
This resistance reportedly prompted the involvement of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and police officers, who allegedly resorted to using firearms and tear gas in the confrontation.
The clash led to injuries among students, with some requiring hospitalization.
The EFCC has announced that the suspects will face court proceedings once investigations are concluded. This action represents a clear message to potential cybercriminals about the serious consequences of engaging in internet fraud.
