The Horrible State Of Public Schools in Enugu And The Shameful Silence Of Ugwuanyi.

A post which surface on social media, especially Facebook, a few days ago, suggests that a certain Girls’ Secondary School located in Agbogugu, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu state has become a direct opposite of what school ought to be.

In the picture attached to the post, students were seen taking their lessons outside, under harsh, intense weather.

The building which inhabited the classrooms was in the most deplorable and precarious state. One can argue that the dread of the possibility of its sudden collapse was what made the students and teachers opt to take the classes outside.

This aptly exemplifies the horrible state of public schools and institutions not just in Enugu state alone, but in the whole of Nigeria.

There’s hardly any state in the country without dilapidated public edifices. Should we discuss hospitals? Post offices? Telecommunication offices? Mention them!

But the most annoying aspect of it all is Ugwuanyi’s passivity as the future of these children peters away under his watch. These kids who have the potentials of becoming professionals in different fields of life are being reduced to “agberos” and criminals. And the government cannot claim to be ignorant of that.

There has been a widespread complaint about the apathy of Nigerian youth towards education, which brought about the slogan “school na scam”, which was rife in social media some time ago. Youths now indulge in quick money-making schemes.

One of the most viable ways to correct this anomaly is to make education very attractive. Making education attractive starts from making Schools and classrooms conducive. Allowing students to study in an unconducive environment will worsen the apathy towards education.

Enugu state government needs to step up and save the future of those students which is on precarious precipice. They owe these students a bright future and the future, they say, starts from today.
