The report, titled, “Nigerian banks: On the cusp of a new dawn”, based the projection on the prospects of the CBN returning to the dollar ratios of capital bases-to-GDP set in 2005.
This is contained in the recently released exposure draft of guidelines on the Management of Dormant Accounts, Unclaimed Balances, and Other Financial Assets in Banks and Other Financial Institutions In Nigeria.
‘The affected banks are First Bank, United Bank for Africa, Wema Bank and Zenith Bank.’
The Governor of the CBN gave the directive at a Bankers’ Committee meeting held on Sunday, 12th March 2023.
With this change, the organization will have a banking subsidiary along with other subsidiaries in the financial services sector.
It said the banks would continue to remain open to serve the public as long as it was safe to do so.
The protesters comprised mainly tricycle and motorcycle operators who were angered by the commercial banks’ refusal to accept the old 200, 500, and 1000 naira notes.
The arrest is consequent to the earlier warning issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria against any form of breach of procedures for the swap of the old and redesigned naira notes.
This was as the association extolled President Muhammadu Buhari for insisting that the 2023 elections must be free, fair, and credible.
It would be recalled that last November, the Central Bank announced that it would redesign the series of N200, N500, and N1000 notes of the Naira.
Traders at the Onitsha Main Market have protested to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over the development saying that the newly redesigned currency is being given to people who pay extra.
“I am afraid that CBN’s January 31st deadline for depositing old notes will not work with such a kind of sharing.” He said
“He said, this would enable them to beat the Jan. 31, 2023 deadline to dispose of the old notes.”
“CBN accordingly stated that agents across the 36 States have been enabled for BVN registrations, opening banking accounts/Wallets, eNaira Wallets, as well as Electonic card distribution, …”
“According to the NDIC, it has recouped enough funds through the sales of the assets of the failed banks to settle depositors.”
