Shehu Sani kicks against the involvement of NASS and NCC In The Electronic Transmission Of Votes.

Civil Rights Activist and Former Senator Representing Kaduna Central Zone, Senator Shehu Sani, has criticised the involvement of National Assembly Of Nigeria- NASS and Nigeria Communication Commission NCC in the electronic transmission of votes.

The Senator, through his social media pages, stated that the involvement of NASS and NCC will unavoidably undermine the Independence of Independent National Electoral Commission-INEC.

“The Independence of INEC is compromised with the involvement of NCC and NASS in the process of transmission of result,” he said.

He also pointed out that because of the vast majority of the ruling party in NASS, there is the likelihood that the results will be twisted to be in their favour.

“Announcing the results of the elections conducted by INEC will be at the mercy or pleasure of the ruling party with the dominance in NASS,” Sani said, “the Chairman of NCC who is an appointee of the President and the Senate President and the Speaker whom are all members of the ruling party can be influenced or pressurised not to approve the electronic process if the result is unlikely to be in the favour the ruling party,” he added.

While pointing to the view that involving lawmakers who are also politicians in the process of deciding the fate of election amounts to partisanship, he stated that lawmakers are always on recess during election which makes it difficult to results to be announced immediately after election.

“During elections, the NASS goes on recess to enable lawmakers return to their constituencies and battle for their political life;the chambers are usually empty until after elections. There is no one on the seat to approve or disapprove anything at such times”, he said.
