Reactions Trail Senate Rejection of Lauretta Onochie’s Nomination as INEC Commissioner

Concerned citizens have expressed their feelings over the rejection of the nomination of the special Assistant on New Media to President Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie as a commissioner, Independent National Electoral Commission INEC.

THE Senate on Tuesday bowed to pressure from Civil Society Organisations, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and other Nigerians and refused to confirm Lauretta Onochie from Delta as a Commissioner of INEC.

According to reports, the refusal was based on Federal Character Principle and to adhere strictly to the Act, just as the Senate said that she is from Delta and the state has May Agbamuche who is the Chairman, Legal Services, INEC.

Meanwhile, De Erudite Media later learnt that the resolution of the Senate was sequel to the consideration of the Senator Kabiru Gaya, APC, Kano South led Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Consequently, some concerned citizens have expressed satisfaction, commending the Senate’s resolution, while noting that their decision have saved democracy in Nigeria.

On the other hand, some citizens however do not see clear justification behind the Senate’s resolution, while calling on the House to review their stance…

Recall that Onochie’s nomination had from the outset attracted mixed reactions from the general public, who have consistently mounted pressures on the Senate to reject the nomination.
