News about the ‘rearrest’ of the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People Of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, broke out in the media a few weeks ago.

It generated a mammoth number of comments from people within and outside Nigeria. To some, it was a great feat, having realized the mayhem his group had reportedly done in the South-East. To others, it was undemocratic, especially when the circumstances that encircled his “rearrest” was considered. To a few others again, it was unnecessary to put such energy to “rearrest” a man who was clamouring for freedom of his people when some parts of the country have been overtaken by insurgents and bandits.

He was reportedly “rearrested” in Kenya through the joint efforts of intelligence agencies and was extradited to Nigeria.

He had also been arraigned in the Abuja High court before Justice Binta Nyako. He will supposedly appear in court on June 26 for the continuation of his trial, but an unverified report has it that his trial has been shifted till September because of the break Judges would soon commence.

Prior to his “rearrest” the government had placed a hundred million reward on the person(s) on whose efforts he will be “rearrested”. Few weeks after this announcement, Kanu was nabbed.

While thinking about Kanu’s “rearrest”, the circumstances and the events that played out before he was nabbed, it is not difficult to come to the conclusion that he was betrayed by friends and close associates.

Could Kanu have revealed his itinerary and travelling schedule to anyone outside the circle of his close associates? No. Kanu had in the past demonstrated a high level of smartness and intelligence. His smartness was aptly exemplified in the manner he left the shores of Nigeria after he was granted bail by the court. Until today not many know how and when he disappeared from Nigeria to the UK.

Hence, it is illogical to think Kanu revealed his plans to anyone outside his circle of friends. He couldn’t have done that. He was betrayed by a close friend whom he had so much trust. It is very clear to the logical minds.
