Nigeria Wins Africa’s First Ever Medal At U17 Women’s World Cup

The Flamingos had the best ever run for Nigeria at the ongoing U17 Women’s World Cup in India, after third place finish in the competition.

Nigeria became the first African team to win a medal at the U17 Women’s World Cup, defeating Germany 3-2 via Penalties. Just after the heartbreak in the semifinal match against Colombia, the Flamingos had one thing in mind, and that’s to finish with a medal and have something to take home. Nigeria got the first goal in the 17th minute through Ajakaye as the Germany looked like they had no plans prior to the game. Just three minutes after the start of second half, the Flamingos scored the second in the 48th minute through Amina Bello. The German side still didn’t show any sign of coming back as Nigeria got the third goal in the 62nd minute through Edidiong Etim. The game looked dead and buried until the 73rd minute when the Germans got a goal back which was supposed to be a consolation goal. The Germans got another goal to make it 3-2 in the 85th minute which unsettled the whole Nigeria setup and early celebrations. Just at the death, Nigeria conceded the third goal and the game was forced to a penalty shootout. The Flamingos were lucky enough to hold their own during the shootout and finally had their chance to celebrate.
