Lekki massacre: LCC disclose why CCTV was removed from tollgate

The Lekki Concession Firm, LCC, has denied allegations that a few hours before the shooting of protesters on Tuesday, it disconnected the CCTV at Lekki tollgate.

Images of an LCC workers with some equipment were circulating on social media, alleging that after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu placed a 24-hour curfew on Tuesday, he was sent to remove the CCTV at the tollgate.

In a statement signed on Wednesday, Responding, LCC, said it had cooperated with the demonstrators and did not delete the CCTV.

LCC maintained that the CCTV was still installed, condemning the shooting, and there was no order from anyone to delete them.

It further showed that some of its equipment had been looted during the rally.

”LCC has cooperated with the protesters from the onset, identifying with the cause and need to end the police brutality. We provided lights, toilets among other items to the youths as a show of solidarity.

”As the protest progresses, our tolling equipment were being looted. We recovered items daily with the help of some of the protesters. Such items included air conditioners, violation alarm bells, monitors, keyboards e.t.c.

”On the 20th of October, we received feedback that some of the rolling equipments were being pulled off, hence we went into the lanes to recover more items including analogue BOSCH tolling devices used to monitor transaction carried out in the toll lanes.

”The perimeter closed circuit television system (CCTV) are Mobotix Digital Camera. They were not removed and are still installed in the lanes even now. There was no instruction from anyone to remove the sprinter CCTV cameras. Removing them will require the use of machinery to reach the heights that they have installed and are still installed.

”We sincerely regrets this unfortunate incident and once again condemn the shooting of unarmed protersters at Lekki tollgate and other location in the state,” it added.
