About twenty thousand members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on Sunday defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The development boosted the chances of the PDP reclaiming the state in the 2023 general election. Naija News learnt that the event took place in Baure, under the Katsina North Senatorial zone. The zone is popularly called Daura senatorial zone where President Muhammadu Buhari comes from. Some defectors are from Mai’adua, Zango and Baure local government areas. The defectors during the event destroyed their initial party membership cards and burnt the symbol of APC which is the broom. Those in attendance at the event include the PDP Chairman, Salisu Majigiri, the Governorship Candidate of the party, Senator Yakubu Lado, Senatorial candidate and serving senator from Daura zone, Ahmed Baba-Kaita, and other top PDP members. PDP in its reaction to the defection claimed that it is the beginning of the end for the APC. The party also attributed the mass defection to the state of Nigeria which has seen insecurity on the rise. The PDP Chairman, Majigiri further stated that most of the defectors are supporters of Buhari’s nephew and member representing Daura/Sandamu/Mai’adua, Fatuhu Muhammed. Recall that Muhammed recently dumped the APC following his inability to secure his return ticket. See photos below:
