INSECURITY: The true story of the Mainok, Borno attacks comes out.
The news outlets and social media has been agog lately about the recent attack on the Nigerian Army by the dreaded Boko Haram sect in conjunction with ISWAP. There has been many stories and insinuations about what actually happened on that fateful day, a clash which brought about the death of many gallant Nigerian soldiers.
A popular social media commentator and activist, AHMAD SALKIDA has this to say on the Mainok incident.
“Islamic State West Africa Province(ISWAP) terrorists have staged an audacious multi-pronged attack targeting a military convoy and base in the Mainok area of Borno State, Northeast Nigeria.
Mainok, the main town of Kaga Local Government area is about 60 kilometres from Maiduguri, the state capital.
The insurgents who came in multiple gun trucks and Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles (MRAPs), ambushed a military convoy delivering newly acquired MRAPs to the theatre of operations on Sunday, April 25.
The reuse of military equipment to ambush and attack troops in the Northeast is a common occurrence.
The insurgents were believed to have also carted away some of the new MRAPs. Sunday’s day time attack led to the death of a Lieutenant Colonel and soldiers.
HumAngle understands that the Nigerian Air Force combat aircraft dispatched to the site of the ambush along Maiduguri – Damaturu road accidentally unleashed fire on troops and may have contributed to the casualties.
Nigerian troops and the insurgents were wearing similar fatigue and using similar vehicles. This was believed to have led to the unfortunate incident between air and ground forces.
It also allowed the ISWAP fighters to trick the troops at the base in Mainok before opening fire and overrunning the base.
The local police outpost was also destroyed during the attack.”
De Erudite Media gathered that the issue of terrorists and bandits wearing Nigerian Military camouflage and using military colours on their vehicles during their attacks has been a recurrent exercise. This trend calls for serious national concern as it’s a known fact that military vehicles and convoys are rarely stopped and searched at any security checkpoints. This means that fake military convoy which could be terrorists or other dangerous groups can pass security checkpoints in broad day light undetected and unchecked simply because they are using military colours. This pose serious security risk to Nigerians and the military as terrorists can engage them in an ambulance and attack them before they will realize that they are dealing with enemies instead of friendly military force.
We therefore call upon the government and military authorities to institute measures to checkmate this trend.
Also, any security organisation’s vehicles that have been seized by terrorists or any other enemies of the Nigerian state should be delisted from the military/security vehicles data base and their plate (registration) numbers made available to the public and all security networks so as to ensure prompt detection should those who stole it from the security organisation dare to use it on any Nigerian road.
